Community Service Needs

Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad

$13,500 awarded in 2023 to purchase and install AEDs in businesses in Colonial Beach. The AEDs are located at Dockside Restaurant, El Toro, High Tides, Lenny’s, Los Hermanos, and Wilkersons.

From the grant application: “Colonial Beach is a small town whose population doubles in size during the summer months. Most of the visitors and residents frequent local restaurants on the river, the bay, and in town. Having AEDs in these frequently visited locations provides life-saving devices in the event of a cardiac emergency until emergency responders arrive.”

Potomac Riverkeeper Network
$1,500 awarded in 2023 for water testing supplies and Swim Guide announcements on WWER for community education and outreach.

The Potomac Riverkeeper Network trains and deploys community volunteers to collect water samples at three high use recreational areas in Colonial Beach to report water quality conditions weekly during the recreational season to the public through the Swim Guide app, on social media, and the radio to ensure public health and safety.

Town of Colonial Beach
$1,800 awarded in 2023 for a handicapped accessible beach mat. The mat is located at the Wilder Avenue beach access.

From the grant application: “The goal is to expand the accessibility of our greatest community asset, by installing two additional beach access mats near the handicapped parking areas, enabling wheelchairs and scooters to enter the beach.”

WWER
$3,200 awarded in 2023 for a back-up generator at the studio site; $1,300 for a back-up generator at the tower/transmitter site; and $600 for back-up satellite equipment for the internet.

From the grant application: “During severe weather, there is a potential for a loss of power throughout the Town which includes the radio station transmission. WWER is hoping to create back-ups for wi-fi and power loss to be able to continue broadcasting essential information. The equipment we are seeking funds for, would allow the station to reliably communicate an impending emergency and direct people to take precautions and find shelter if necessary. This would be coordinated with the Town’s emergency procedures.”

Funding for grants comes from generous donors and proceeds from fundraisers.
