Colonial Beach Community Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients
COLONIAL BEACH, VA—Two Colonial Beach High School (CBHS) seniors recently received a total of $2,000 in scholarships from the Colonial Beach Community Foundation. Vanessa Alicea and Ariana Druce each received a $1,000 scholarship; $500 will be distributed this year for Fall semester and $500 next year for Spring semester.
Scholarship Committee members Linda Brubaker and Debi Chedester coordinated the applications with Colonial Beach High School and conducted interviews of the potential scholarship recipients. “We were impressed by the quality of the candidates and their applications,” said Brubaker and Chedester. “We enjoyed meeting all the applicants during the interviews and see a wonderful future for these students.”
Alicea plans to attend Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia, to study business and economics. “The prospect of delving into the intricate mechanisms behind business operations and exploring how economic principles shape our world holds a great fascination for me,” said Alicea. “This scholarship will enable me to further my education by providing financial assistance and unlocking new avenues for growth and success.”
Druce will attend George Mason University and is interested in studying environmental science and sustainability along with business. “Advocating for and protecting the health and safety of the world and its inhabitants is very important to me,” said Druce. “This scholarship will help to relieve some of the financial burden that I will be carrying throughout college. However, it also serves as a motivator because it lets me know that there was someone who believed in me enough to help contribute to my academic career.”
“Thank you to Colonial Beach High School Principal Scott Lush and others for encouraging the students to apply for the over $60,000 in scholarships awarded just through organizations in Colonial Beach,” said Michele Inderrieden, president of the Colonial Beach Community Foundation. “Our scholarship committee carefully evaluated each application and interviewed the students and appreciates the coordination from the high school.”
Qualifications for the Colonial Beach Community Foundation scholarships include participating in at least 30 hours of community service work done outside of school in the Colonial Beach community, a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, and plans to attend a 2- or 4-year college or university, or technical or trade school upon high school graduation. Residents who wish to continue their education but who may have graduated from high school years ago are also encouraged to apply for a Colonial Beach Community Foundation scholarship to help with their continuing education.
Funding for the Colonial Beach Community Foundation scholarships is provided by generous donations from community members and supplemented through the Foundation’s unrestricted funds if necessary. Donations to the Scholarship Fund can be made to the Colonial Beach Community Foundation earmarked for the Scholarship Fund.
